Good Friday

On Good Friday 18th April at 2pm we mark the death of our Lord on a cross with readings and meditation in the service of Tenebrae. Good Friday is a sombre day despite it's name of 'Good'. We remember that Jesus died because God loves us so much he never gives up on us, no matter how much we deny him, betray him, or ignore him.
At St Mary's we hold a service of Tenebrae which means 'Shadows'. Members of the church read a succession of readings telling the events of Jesus' arrest, trial and death. There are 15 candles lit before the beginning of the service. After each reading a candle is extinguished and the darkness gathers. Eventually only a single candle is left alight, the Easter light from the previous year. At the telling of Christ's death this also is extinguished. The service ends in silent waiting for the third hour.
